The highly-anticipated Dan Murphy’s Decoded Spirit winners have been announced for 2024 recognising outstanding spirits from across Australia and throughout the world, while helping customers navigate their drinks discovery.

In its third year, The Decoded Spirits Awards selection process is the result of a rigorous 2-day tasting event from a panel of 13 esteemed Spirits judges tasting more than 450 products across 19 categories.

Those categories include Agave - Anejo, Agave - Blanco, Agave - Reposado, Apéritifs, Digestifs & Liqueurs, Brandy / Cognac / Armagnac, Gin - Australian, Gin - Coloured & Sloe, Gin - International, Non Alcoholic (Spirits Substitute), Pre Batched Cocktails, Rum, Rum - Spiced, Scotch - Blended Whisky, Scotch - Single Malt Whisky, Vodka - Australian, Vodka - International, Whisk(e)y - Australian, Whisk(e)y - North American and Whisk(e)y - World.

And to eliminate any potential bias or room for influence all judging is carried out under blind tasting conditions.

This year’s winners embody the craftsmanship of producers right across the country, with a record number of Australian Whisky entries this year.

There have been some interesting state based trends to emerge.

South Australia and Victoria were tied as the states with the highest number of winners and finalists, with 7 producers making the leaderboard.

Western Australia’s Old Young's Pavlova Vodka 700mL, which was named as a finalist in the Australian Vodka category, has been recognised for its delightful tribute to the Aussie classic dessert. It’s been described as a great base for a champagne cocktail or a sour, but equally as good when mixed with cranberry juice or lime and soda.

Unsurprisingly, the state of Queensland has dominated the Rum category with two, local producers named as finalists.

Tasmania has dominated the Australian Whiskey category, recording three finalists. Known for some of the cleanest water in the world, it makes it an ideal place for producing world class whisky.

South Australia has dominated the category for Australian gin producers as either a winner or finalist.

Dan Murphy’s Head of Spirits Sarah Hall said the awards are about celebrating excellence as well as taking out the guesswork for customers.

“These awards really recognise the high quality spirits on the market but also pay homage to the incredible workmanship of Australian producers,” she said.

“We are incredibly lucky to have some of the best producers in the industry right at our doorstep. Australian producers demonstrate not only a high level of skill and tenacity but also creativity relying on natural products from our diverse landscape.

“From sourcing ingredients like botanicals unique only to Australia to sourcing high quality Australian barley, all of these elements really demonstrate that Australian producers deserve to be on the world stage.”

This year’s Decoded Spirit Awards also present a unique offering for customers by presenting detailed tasting notes making customers’ drinks discovery even more enjoyable.

“We wanted to break the mould and in the context of streamlining the process for people to enjoy quality spirits and provide another level of guidance for those especially who may be unfamiliar with the world of spirits.

“We know in terms of the younger demographic, with changing macroeconomic conditions many are looking to elevate their at-home experiences.

“The MilZ cohort want to explore new and sweeter tasting drinks and want to be able to use their creativity to create insta-worthy cocktails.

“These are the people we know who will really gravitate towards this kind of initiative - high quality spirits that are unpretentious and accessible, regardless if you have the knowledge of a professional bartender or not.”

There’s even more to love about this year’s Decoded Spirit Awards with exclusive My Dans member offers across the range of entrants to provide great value for customers.
