A South Australian McLaren Vale blend of Grenache, Shiraz and Mourvèdre has won the highly coveted “Best in Show” title at the prestigious 2024 Decanter World Wine awards in London.

The “Red Knot Classified GSM 2022 ” by Shingleback, part of Endeavour Group’s premium wine portfolio Paragon Wine Estates, is among one of 50 wines from a selection of 18,000 entries to be awarded the top honour.

The Decanter World Wine Awards are regarded as one of the world’s most renowned competitions with wines selected by a rigorous judging panel made up of nearly 250 sommeliers and wine experts.

Shingleback chief winemaker Mark Jamieson said the blend represents the pinnacle of winemaking artistry, where mastering each varietal comes together.

“With this particular GSM blend (Grenache, Shiraz, Mataro), I was aiming to highlight the unique strengths of each varietal. With this, you can then create a combination that surpasses their individual qualities,” he said.

“My goal is for people to really appreciate the varietal fruit flavours which are also enhanced by subtle oak maturation.

“The desired outcome is a seamless wine that possesses the intricate complexity akin to a multi-layered cake.”

Mark Jamieson also paid homage to the famed McLaren Vale landscape.

“The unique combination of long summer days, rich ancient earth, and a community of hard-working growers forms the foundation of our winemaking,” he said.

“This unwavering commitment to the land is a hallmark of Shingleback.

As the winemaker, I really try to approach my work with a deep sense of listening, using not just my ears but also a keen understanding and intuition.

“This process is a collaboration involving myself, the growers, and the vine. “Together, we strive to bring the vine’s story to life in every bottle of wine we produce.” The “Red Knot Classified GSM 2022” by Shingleback is available at Dan Murphy’s for $19.99.
